To answer my own question Bruno is Mobile and trades as Unique Star Service
He grew up with the cars from the 70's and 80's. Ph. 0413 495 880
He has the use of a well equipped workshop in Leichhardt as necessary.

Bruno name is "Dolfo." He rebuilt the front suspension for me .The support bushes from cross member to the chassis are to much hard work for my ageing body. He knows the older Mercs but is a bit of a super salesman. Dealer training leaves it's mark !
The cruise control cost $770 fitted by Nigel Apps 0418116404 . He is Mobile
The units are " Commander " and fitting to an older Merc is not that easy if you have not done it before. As I watched him do it I was glad I did not tackle it myself. Also if he supplies and fits if there is a problem he will sort it. The units are readly available on e- Bay . The vacuum units are cheaper but may not be strong enough to pull the throttle of an Auto equipped car.

Thank you, Sean. That's excellent information. One has to weigh up the pros (genuine rebuilt replacement) against the after market item as fitted to your car. I do think that the genuine units take a bit of 'setting up' apart from having to get your head close to the pedals, on the other hand you have the after market unit as fitted to you at a fairly considerable cost. I decided to go the new route as in another life I had considerable experience repairing Vehicle electronics (Self taught) eg., a lot of BMW dash boards. They have a finite life , like us we cannot wind the clock back. Using this logic I have replaced all the Relays and Sensors also the Fuel Pump. All thirty years old
so I can't complain. Sean

Yes that's a very good idea and I'll look at doing the same, plus replacing all the fuses and making sure I have spares....

You guys do know that an hour with a faulty cruise control module from a 116 and they are again good for another 20 years don't you?

They seem to suffer from dry solder joints and a touch up with a good soldering iron, some solder wick or a solder sucker and some nice thin quality solder and they are good as gold.

I did the unit in the Brown SE 12 months ago thinking id remove it from the SE and add it to an SEL at a later date.

If I can find the few pics I took I'll write a tutorial with tips, do's and don't s.

Can't dispute your success with the soldering iron Tony, it's all down to the quality of the board and the componants and even the quality of the solder. My choice of a new after market unit was prompted because I would have had to hunt around and find a complete system including the wireing etc. The suggestion to change the fuses is a good idea as well, get rid of the alumimium and fit brass. Alumimium will oxadise and have a high resistance . Ask me how I know ! Sean

Not only should we use Brass fuses but the slug has to be ceramic and not plastic as most are.

The plastic core fuses actually melt over time....
