Default Quiz Question of the week (2/5/17)

Citroen set up a factory in Slough, UK to supply cars to Britain and the Empire. Why, given they had this factory are there so many RHD Paris built Traction Avants here in Australia?

Supplementary Question:
- What does Ferdinand Porsche have to do with the 2cv.

Supplementary Question 2:
- The design of the transmission for the Traction Avant was changed at the 11th hour. Why and what was the original design?

Because they were frightened silly by the prospect of dealing with British Leyland? No ... well it could be true.

I suspect the prospect of dealing with BL would have been terrifying but the Citroen factory in Slough had been wound down some years before it's creation!

Am I allowed to take these questions over to Aussiefrogs to try to find an answer? Perhaps not...

Brian

As Order 1305 refers generally to trade union powers I'll put union disruption out there as a reason not to operate in the UK.
No clue on the Porsche connection. EDIT. Boxer engine design
I know the Citroen logo is based on the Chevron gear set which produced no backlash and was very strong but far too expensive to produce in mass production, is this a factor?

The others won't help here.

I'm pretty sure Ferdinand Porsche had no involvement in the engine of the 2CV. The original water cooled engine was designed before the war by Maurice Sainturat. After the war, Walter Becchia redesigned the engine to be made from light alloy and be air cooled. Ferdinand Porsche would have been in Prison at that time so wasn't involved.

The double helical gears that Andre Citroen purchased the patent for are not relevant to the design of the Traction Gearbox.

OK, time for a few more hints:

1) Primary Question:
There are actually two reasons for this, but my hints have all been focused on the first, and primary reason, as does the hint below.
There was no major industrial action at the Slough Citroen factory in 1951, in fact it was a bumper year for production with almost 3,000 cars leaving the factory gates. Yet despite that, many cars in Australia for 1951 were paris sourced.

1b) Secondary reason:
Paris Traction

Slough Traction

2) Secondary 1:
The TPV was going to launch in 1939, but with the outbreak of the war, Pierre-Jules Boulanger ordered the cars to be destroyed. Today, only 6 of these early cars are known to exist.
Ferdinand Porsche did visit the Citroen factory during the war

3) Secondary 2:
Dimitri Sensaud de Lavaud
