That was the 280s.

Basically the four cylinder cars got the 5.5"
Sixes got the 6"
V8's got the 6.5"

There are probably a few exceptions.

Even the 350 got the 6.5 -
https://mercedes-benz-publicarchive....xhtml?oid=4871

By the time of the W126 the wheel had a W126 part number. Not sure if there were other changes. W126 part number was also correct for the R107 from then.

Really the 6.9 should have come standard with the 15x7 Fuchs wheel. No idea why it didn't.

Hmmm sounds odd. So the 6.9 had 215 tyres & the 450s had 205s on the same width wheel?? If true they really didn’t make the 6.9 different enough to justify the huge price hike!

They did the same on the code 822 W126 560's as well. 215 tyres on the 15x7 wheel, the same wheel that other W126 models had 205s.

Mark, the price hike was purely due to the relatively low volume, and the different mechanical components. Engine, whilst designated M100 had absolutely nothing in common with the 6.3 unit. Whilst some items could be shared with the 450, such as the fuel system (K-Jet, Injectors, Fuel Pump and Auxiliaries, the cost of engine components themselves, the variation in size of the gearbox casing and some of the internals, plus a diff ratio exclusive to the 6.9, just pushed up the price.

The main difference, of course, can be traced to the suspension system. No need for me to enumerate on the various changes, but obviously they were substantial enough to really push up the price. I guess that's where it stands. The volume of production was slow by major manufacturing numbers, and every engine was bench tested, I think, for many hours. Plus we had a Ch. 116 flagship, and it was a privilege that one would have to indulge in. Those are my reasons. Regards Styuria

Don't get me wrong, I love the 6.9 just some of the features that were standard on the model don't add up. It must've been quite a different era back then when owners liked to hide among the masses. Personally I've never understood why you'd spend all that money and delete the badges to pretend you're just a regular 450. And I just don't get the whole 'sleeper' theme. Why would you want to drive a fast car that looks like a sh*theap? Personally I love nothing more than fresh gloss paint and admiring the top-of-the-line models with high performance engines. Maybe I just like shiny things too much?

Yes the wheels were found on a damaged 450SEL. And they have the alloy hub centers too.

From what I gather, in Europe at the time, there were cultural reasons not to flaunt your wealth that much. Also, this was the time after the Arab oil embargo and so 'gas guzzler' cars were frowned upon. I saw a stat once that a lot of 6.9 sold in Germany were sold without the 6.9 badge for that reason.

I personally like the idea of a sleeper but I still think the 15x7 baroque wheels should have been standard on the 6.9.

To my understanding the W116 came with 14x6 inch Bundts wheels and only the W107 and 6.9 came with 14x6.5 inch Bundts
