Default 450 SEL repaint

Hi,

as a new member I would like to introduce myself and the 450 SEL.

This is not my first Mercedes, I bought it a year ago from a neighbour who had spend a surprising amount to get most of the mechanical sorted.

I had to fix a few bits on the front suspension and the sticking heater flaps, a work where you wish you had very long fingers and more of them.
Instead of enjoying the car I decided to get it repainted. There was a little bit of rust on the rear trunk sides but that was quickly taken care of and then out came the paint striper.
I was a bit tense when we took the glass out, expecting rust in the window openings. But there was none.
At this point the car is painted and reassembly is next.

I have never put in glass in a Mercedes before. I have new front and rear glass and Mercedes rubbers, can anyone recommend an installer for that?
The rear parcel shelf carpet is not the original one and dreadful. I did get new speakers and grills from Königs in Germany, but I do not know what to do with the carpet. Now without the window would be the perfect time to change that.
Any one with recommendations? I can not even say what colour the carpet is. The seats are in a brown real leather, but it looks so good that I do think that the interior was remade.
The carpet is either “Tabac” or “Dattel”, although I find it to light for tabac but to dark for dattel.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to source a parcel shelf carpet?

And just to make my list longer, the AC has a tiny leak, it does not hold the vacuum long. Any reccomendations for a shop that knows what is does and does not charge the world?

Furthermore I am looking for a correct Hirschmann aerial and a period radio. There is a hole where the antenna goes and there is a hole where the radio belongs.

Marcus

Hello Marcus,

Your car looks great!

for the rear parcel shelf, Styria on the forum may have a contact. He sourced new carpets for his old 450SE which looked great. So hopefully he sees this thread.

If not, I know people have bought kits from world upholstory:

I'm not sure if they do the rear parcel shelf, but it may be worth contacting them.

Where are you located for the recommendation for a shop? Is that Mosman NSW (i.e lower north shore Sydney)

Bryce

Hi Brendan,

That sounds very tempting. I have a few smaller parts that are missing or broken. Unfortunately I have no space to store a car, that is the down side with city living. But if you want to sell a few smaller pieces, I would gladly exchange them for my lesser ones.
Regards
Marcus

Hi Marcus, welcome to TK. If I remember correctly, I did receive notifivation from you in my role as Registrar for the W116 models - such as your 450, as well as the other models with different engine configurations. I am glad you joined TK, and it looks as though you are taking giant strides as far as your restoration work is concerned.

I am sorry that I am a little late in responding, so am not sure to what degree your work has now been completed. Regarding the parcel shelf, there is no ready made replacement being produced by any company, whether that be here or overseas. All one receives is additional material for the parcel shelf if you are ordering a carpet kit, but the shelf itself, with provision for the first aid kit, is made up manually by a Motor Trimmer. It is time consuming and difficult to copy the exact original, but one can come close. I also, in my own right, have hundreds of various small items for the interiors etc., but it would require contact and description of whatever items you are missing or looking for. Regards Styria
