Default 6.9 Listings on Car Sales

There are currently five 450SEL 6.9s listed for sale on the Car Sales website. They vary in price from $35K. upwards. A couple of them are well known to me, but here are some further details and assessments as I see them.

1979 262,888 kms. $35,000 Not particularly spectacular from any front. In particular, the back seat is in need of re-upholstery, but best for others to have a look as well.

1978 344,500 kms. $47,000 I have known this car since the year 2000, when a replacement gearbox and differential were fitted. For the past three to four years, owned locally, but was sold by the owner to Melbourne interests for, I believe $16K. The front seat leather has been repainted (I don't think that new leather has been fitted), and last paint job involved the replacement of a rusty bonnet with flaking paint with an item resprayed by Michel's painter. Don't know if I would want to pay the asking price, although a comprehensive maintenance record would come with the car.

1978 231,000 kms. $49,000 I think this is quite a nice car, sporting however a broken height adjustment lever for the driver's seat, and the door trims showing the usual sign of foam lining that's turned to dust. I don't know why owners don't bother to get something like that fixed. It's perhaps notable for the sump guard that's fitted, plus an exceptionally clean front and rear suspension appearance. It looks well cared for.

1979 Gold with about 138K. kms. I know the car well. It needed a lot of front end work when I first saw it, and it would not surprise if the seller has spent $25K. on maintenance. I might add, not with me, but the car probably did the rounds with various mechanics. Parked out in the open, right on a Bay, but luckily enough rust hadn't affected the car. It was also previously owned by an elderly German gentleman, but he hardly ever used the car. I think he had a large German Shepherd who absolutely crucified the back seat which, of course, is a fairly common 6.9 issue. We repaired that seat. $60K. ? Hmm.....the seller paid $22K. plus his expenses, of course.

1978 Gold - check mileage. Not all that low. Rear Seat really marginal already, usual door trim problems. Not cheap at $69K.

There is also a Silver Green listed at $49,000, but not on Car Sales. May be Gumtree, but not sure. That seems quite a nice car.
Maybe those prices might encourage Michel to re-list his red 6.9. It has a very nice interior, and has had quite a bit of money spent on it. Anyway, enough from me. Enjoy looking. Regards Styria

I suspect these asking prices have come due to the recent shannons sale of the low mileage example. People are willing to pay a big premium for low miles and excellent original condition (assuming documented history), but just because a car sells strongly because of that premium does it mean every example will command the same. I suspect these cars will be up for sale for a long time.

I am not so sure - to all intents and purposes, the $47K. car is very genuine with a great mechanical history. With the $60K. gold car owned up at Wyong Bay, that is definitely low mileage and unmolested save for all the mechanical work that was carried out on the car. As I said, he paid $22K.

The recent $66K. plus auctioneer's premium has now climbed by $20.K for an excellent, and I mean excellent, respray, plus $10K. of mechanics. Next job is the interior ! See what I mean ? Regards Styria

........is to draw attention to the fact that asking prices for good 6.9s have risen sharply in the last two years. Even I myself had to be made aware that these cars were being listed on Car Sales and, more importantly, it is an important occasion for so many 6.9s coming up at the same time. The one mentioned, but not listed on ebay, was merely used as an example of what some owners are prepared to spend on their cars. That was the only reference, and nothing else.

N.B. Another way of putting it - it is an attempt to create a better market for future sales, especially for cars that may not represent the "pinnacle" of desirability, such as originality, Australian delivered etc., such as my Gleaming Beauty which, on many counts, is probably a better car than the ones advertised, although not quite appreciated to the same extent for the reasons stated. Regards Styria
