Default Cars in Cuba

Yes, time has stood still - I also have some videos on life in Cuba, which I am hoping to download to TK in the near future. There is just one little matter that's got me worried - if and when Cuba opens up its borders, there'll be hundreds of cashed up Yanks wanting to get inthere and grab the cars to be over-restored. A bit sad. Regards Styria

I was in Turkey in 1970, for about a month. I saw quite a few current looking American cars. They were very 'Cubaesque'. Most of them had six cylinder side valve engines in them.

There is a current import restriction for US citizens on goods originating from or transiting Cuba...

Of course, none for RotW.

There are some strong moves afoot, or an under current so to speak, to "Westernize" Cuba. It is an extremely poor country at the moment, and no one really knows what its Government is likely to implement to effect some substantial changes.

In the videos I have, it is quite evident that Havanna once was a magnificent city. Decades of Castroism have seen the deterioration of buildings, roads etc. It's quite co-incidental, but the former East Germany displays virtually the same degree of neglect that's been evident in both countries. As I said, I am just waiting to be able to download a couple of really interesting videos. Regards Styria

I think there is little doubt that Cuba will open its borders and the US will drop the sanctions, however I am 99.9% certain that they will not allow any of the old cars to be exported. It is an iconic tourist attraction for them and without that, it only leaves cigars. Having been there, it is a unique experience to see an old '50's Chevvy or Olds being driven around with the gear shift OUTSIDE the drivers door as they have had to modify something to keep it on the road.

Like Craig mentioned, old US cars in Cuba are also so modified that only a high cost frame off restoration will do them justice.
But they certainly are a bright and colourful sight in Cuba!
