Default Steam Train to the Red Sea

Quite a fascinating and well presented video of this train trip from Asmara, Eritrea's capital, to the Red Sea. Takes one back to yesteryear, to quite depraved living conditions still being experienced nowadays. Would one want to live there ? I wouldn't. Please enjoy. Regards Styria

Smile Re: Steam Train to the Red Sea

What caught my eye was The Red Sea. A great Post. On the last Ship through the Suez Canal before it was closed and nationalised by Nasser in 1956 we entered the Red Sea with soaring temperatures and taking Salt Tablets. We stopped at Yemen to see a World so different to Ireland. Then on across the Indian Ocean via India & Ceylon to Perth. Seems a long time ago now. But a great adventure for a 21 year old. Been through again in 1965 with new Bride un-route from New York via the UK & Ireland. Just to show off we have been through the Panama Canal as well. We met on that trip on way to America some 55 years ago, still together , shows you the resilience of the Fairer Sex!

Sean, great little story on your part. Perhaps I have whetted your appetite, and maybe of some others - this is another quite remarkable video of the Eritrean railway system. Fascinating. Regards Styria

Cool Re: Steam Train to the Red Sea

Another Trigger.... first part of video show little smoke being emitted from the Engine ..Anthracite Coal ?.. I recall the then so called "Pea Soup Fogs" in London in the fifties, caused by the pollution from millions of House hold Coal fires. After that there was a switch to Anthracite Coal ( from Wales ? ) Problem partially solved till North Sea Gas fired central heating came along. The African Engines were belching ghastly black smoke, What were they burning ? crude Oil ? Cars of the sixties ( ? ) were not much better A worn Austin A 40 was the worst culprit. Big advances today even in Planes and Ships. Plus of course much ,much cleaner Petrol with 98 Octane un leaded.
And not forgetting high pressure direct injection systems with a Turbo. in small capacity Engines.

Love a good steam train video! On the subject of smoke, I remember seeing a pic of the Lusitania when she was stationary and I couldn't believe how much smoke she was generating. WOW how times have changed....

What a part of history. I'm really glad trains like that are still operational. I hope I get a chance some day to see that in person.
