Interesting a number of PMs have been Benz drivers.

Gough demanded the 450SELs as PM
Hawke had the finnie above
Keating had mercs
I have seen Abbot driving around in A W202 (he is my local MP)

And not a PM, but Jeff Kennet had a 6.9.

Keating still has a 300SEL 3.5, it was spotted recently in the Southern Highlands, and a 600 that was restored locally (Sydney) which I have a photo of somewhere approaching the Harbour Bridge from the north side.
Kennet's 6.9 was the one driven by Fangio as a press car when he was here in the late '70s and had the "demonstration" race in a Silver Arrow against Jack Brabham. He owned it for around 20 years and the clear coat had peeled on the horizontal surfaces when he sold it to a MB club of VIC member who tarted it up and flipped it. It was featured in Unique Cars back in 2009 in a 6.3 - 6.9 comparo.
If I recall Whitlams 116's were sold as soon as Fraser won power.

And notice the aftermarket outside mirror on the Finnie, Hawke must have been watching his back as president of the ACTU back then!

I have seen Abbott interviewed on TV recently Abbott's C-Class it was parked in the garage.

C-Class was a gold colour could not see if it was the 4cyl or 6cyl model.

Have also seen former Speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop behind the wheel of an M-Class 4WD.

Keating's Mercedes collection does sound impressive!

Keating does have quite the taste for antiques and obviously Classic cars!

Way back in the 1970's obviously the Ford Government cars weren't cutting the mustard for Whitlam bring in the 450SEL 6.9 for Gough only the best hey comrade?

Hey Ant let me know if you chase up the photo of Keating's 300SEL 3.5 and the 600 Mercedes please?

I don't think Gough had a 6.9.
My recollection is that is was a simple 450SEL.

He came to power in 1972 and was sacked in 1975, before the 6.9 was released in Oz

Exactly right Ant & Michel in regards to the 6.9 Mercedes.

Found an old 1970's paper article in regards to Gough & the 450SEL.

Reading from the paper article any buyers of the 450SEL would have paid $20K but the Government only forked out $9500.

"C1", number plate for Gough and when only the best would do for Gough!

Goughs car will be easy to recognise, the only W116 I have ever seen with a column shift.

Didn't even know they imported W116s into Australia with a steering column mounted gear lever!

Well it looks like Tony Abbot has embraced the old dart and flicked the W202 C280 for a X Type Jag. They too are cheap as chips and with an interior full of cow and tree, very suitable for a Monarchist! I wonder if the leaper on the bonnet is symbolic

Interesting choice.

I pictured him in driving goggles at the wheel of a steam car, running on coal of course
