Default 560SEC 6.9 for sale

So who's up for something interesting?? I wonder what the top speed would be given the different final ratio?

I am just not so sure about this car. There would be a number of questions that would need an answer. The hard work has been done, say perhaps 80%, but it would be the other 20% that would cause probably never ending headaches unless, of course, you have deep pockets.

It is of some concern when you witness an engine swap without any detailing to have taken place. Those exhaust manifolds with rusty retaining nuts - the assemblies on both sides, plus the alternator should be removed, for refurbishing purposes. Then, what about the rocker covers - why would you not want those removed and powder coated ? So much easier to do with engine removed. Self levelling - there is a hydraulic reservoir in place - why not at least retain the self levelling at the rear ? It is a nice feature. Also, what has he done with the dry sump arrangement ? How has he solved the installation of the reservoir ? Also, the front is down due to the heavier engine - I am afraid that a future purchaser would have some serious development work on his hands to finish the project properly. At the moment, it looks half baked - but, what a machine it would be once finished and done properly ! Regards Styria

N.B. BTW Mark, what's your assessment ?

A lot of effort for not much return.

If you were to go through the hassle of fitting a dry sump engine in a somewhat rare (already) 560SEC, you'd get something newer, with many more kWs and have the transmission also altered. (a few 5.5 engines from E55 cars have been coming up for sale lately).

As the Godfather said, the 80 per cent easy part is done... what about the rest?
And he doesn't have a 690SEC badge

A not altogether happy conversion. Heavy chunk of cast iron over the front wheels.
AMG did about 20 quad cam M117 all alloy 560 SEC's.
With properly sorted AMG suspension mods., and much less weight over the front wheels, a very nice 560SEC should be the result.

Hi David, do you have any links, or more concrete information, relating to the quad cam you are referring to ? I must admit to not being privy to any information on such engines. Google ? Anything better than that ? Regards Styria

Less power than the 560 engine and at least 50% more weight ?

Styria: There is a picture of an AMG all alloy quad cam M117 engine in one of the books I borowed from you, some time ago.

I have just found a picture of this engine on Google Images.

I think the quad cam M117s were the same engines fitted to the Hammer W124s.

The regular M117 produced more power than a 6.9 but a lot less torque. I'd suggest a 6.9 would lunch a 560 4 speed tranny (if you could adapt one to the M100).

Looks like the secondary firewall has been removed. Why remove the rear SLS? Despite being lighter than a W116 it could be slower to 100kmh due to the taller diff ratio. But the top speed could be higher than 6.9

I doubt you'd be able to register this car in Victoria as it's an early engine in a later car, so you'd have all sorts of EPA issues.... They might let you if it was running LPG, but why would you bother!

A 560SEL drivetrain in a W116 would make more sense, but the ECUs and wiring looms would be a pain! But completely achievable if you're the patient type...

This would be better if you could ever find one.... (not sure what he's done with the air cleaner). Note that he mentions the 6.9 and is very passionate about his car:

MY 6.9 recently had a 3.01:1 crown wheel & pinion fitted when I had the diff rebuilt. The car is now quite a bit more throttle responsive as Styria will attest. I guess that it also has a lower top speed, but that is academic on Australian roads. On trailing throttle driving, it uses about the same amount of fuel.

The reasons for a quad cam M117 engined 560 SEC's performance are quite different.

Thanks Mark just let Cam know SELfor50 as he looked at the car but wanted it engineered as that is a problem in Canberra.

This has bee for sale for a while - I believe MB Spares did at least some of the conversion. I agree with other comments though - not sure why you'd bother.
