Default Volkswagen Van Hoarder...

For $350,000 (USD), or about $6,363.63 per bus, you could become the new owner of 55 Westfalia-converted Volkswagen T2s and Vanagon campers...

It is really amazing how practical some of the versions or models are. I have only ever driven one fifty plus years ago, and I was certainly quite comfortable behind the wheel. Very comfortable buslike driving position, reassuring engine noise and, most importantly, it had a mattress in the middle section - ideal to have a rest on. Yep, I liked it and would buy one now in a jiffy - if I had the crazy money they are fetching. Regards Styria

My folks bought a new 8 seater Kombi Microbus, as they were named, in 1987, green with a white glasshouse. That thing took us everywhere.
It was purchased as a delivery van for the business but quickly became the weekend adventure vehicle.
Dad took me Roo and Rabbit shooting in it in Bourke and Coonabarabran , Mum and I took it to Alice Springs via Hawkers Gate, Millpareena station and the William Creek hotel then up the Oodnadatta track where we camped behind what is now the Pink Roadhouse.
It's only stumble was when the throttle linkage fell of one of the dual carbys during a rough but dry creek crossing.
The FJ55 Landcruiser we were travelling with was much more troublesome, suffering vapour lock often as soon as we left the bitumen.
German Engineering at it's best.
Piy about the 1970's rusty steel.

Wow,
What a huge amount of ks that bus did mate.

Yep
Who would have thought an air cooled engine would have been SO at home in outback Australia.

Saying that.
As per warranty reports for truck failures over the last 50 years in Australia, cooling systems were right at the top of this failure list.
Some minor, some catestrophic.

So no cooling system, really reduces the failure rate.

I just noticed my typo, the bus was bought in 1978, not 87.
I was 13 but a keen amatuer photographer with my Russian built Zenith R.
Somewhere I have an album with the old photos
